  23. Hauppauge, N.Y. -- Two Long Island men were arrested yesterday and charged with
  24. planning to use radioactive material to assassinate several Suffolk County
  25. officials and political leaders.

  27. Suffolk County District Attorney James M. Catterson said the targets of the
  28. conspiracy included the chairman of the Suffolk County Republican Committee, a
  29. Suffolk legislator and the chief investigator for the town of Brookhaven.

  31. Catterson, a Republican who was reportedly one of the targets, said the plot was
  32. "something out of a novel, involving an individual obsessed with hatred for
  33. mainstream political figures."

  35. The two who were charged, were John J. Ford, 47, of Bellport, N.Y., a former
  36. Suffolk County court officer and president of the Long Island UFO Network, and
  37. Joseph Mazzachelli, 42, of Manorville, N.Y., who was described by Catterson as
  38. having a criminal record for a series of burglaries.

  40. Ford and Mazzachelli, both believers in UFOs whose organization has accused the
  41. government of covering up the UFO sightings, were arraigned in Suffolk County
  42. Criminal Court in Central Islip on charges of second-degree conspiracy to commit
  43. murder.  They were denied bail.

  45. Catterson said Ford tried to solicit people to spread radioactive mterial on the
  46. car seats of his intended victims, strew it about their homes and place it in
  47. food and toothpaste, hoping they would contract fatal diseases.

  52. All I know about Ford is that he has tried to perpetrate three Long Island
  53. crashed saucer hoaxes dating back to 1989.  He has been pretty much disavowed by
  54. responsible UFO organizations and individuals, such as Dr. Bruce Maccabee, who
  55. declared a 1992 video of a "crash" to be a hoax.  Ford had been trying to sell
  56. the video to "Unsolved Mysteries."
